Install/Update FTDI driver for Windows

The first thing you need to do on Windows is install/update the FTDI 2232 driver that supports the OpenRD mini-USB to serial connection. The driver will configure two ports on FTDI and configure one of the ports as Serial Port.

Getting Windows XP driver

Look in openrd-ftdi-drivers.zip on the DVD shipped with your OpenRD or download it from Marvell. This driver is meant for Microsoft Windows XP (but may work elsewhere).

Serial Terminal for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Microsoft has made it a little more difficult to get on a serial terminal program, program such as TeraTerm and PuTTY work great as serial terminal programs and have been tested with the OpenRD's mini-USB cable.

In order to find the COM port to use, go to control panel/system/device manager and look in the Ports section. OpenRD is listed as USB serial port and after it between brackets is the name of the COM port (e.g. COM12). Baud rate to use is 115200 (8N1). If you got problems to interrupt the boot-process because the OpenRD doesn't accept your Any-Key then try to set the Handshake for the serial connection to NONE.

Linux

Use ‘minicom' terminal program to connect to OpenRD platform using /dev/ttyUSB1 device with following configuration:
Below are the configuration settings for minicom:

  • Login as root.
  • Execute minicom -s.
  • From the menu select Serial port setup.
  • Set Serial device field to /dev/ttyUSB1. (Assuming development board connected to USB port)
  • Set Bps/Par/Bits field to 115200 8N1.
  • Set Hardware Flow Control to No.
  • Set Software Flow Control to No.
  • Select Exit.
  • Re-run minicom, using command - minicom -o
